Teaching Asher about romance

9 12 2008

Last week at Mars Hill, the sermon was about parenting. Pastor Mark spent the last few minutes of the sermon talking about daddys and their little girls. He encouraged every father at Mars Hill to take their daughter on a special “daddy date” for Christmas. The point was both that children need special time to be cherished by their parents and that girls in particular need to learn what romance is from their daddy.

Mark and I have been given the honor of raising boys. We have these three handsome little men: Asher, Micah and Zephan. Bound up in their growing bodies is the potential for good or evil, wisdom or folly, service or selfishness. As parents, we have the responsibility to shepherd them so that they love and obey God.

He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8

This is the desire of our hearts as parents, that our children would walk humbly with Jesus, love grace and live righteously. We want our sons to grow to be Godly husbands and fathers. To prepare them for this, we want to teach them about romance.

What this looks like at our house at this point is that Asher is going to take me on a Christmas date. He wants to take me out for ice skating, hot chocolate, and the Christmas lights at the Bellevue Botanical Garden. He will get dressed up and he will do chores to earn the money to take me out. Our hope is that through years of practice, our boys will become honorable young men who treat young women with respect and kindness. We want them to know how to pursue a woman when they are ready for marriage. We want them to love their future wives well.

Asher will celebrate is fourth birthday this Thursday and hopefully we can find time for a Mommy Date over the next week.
