Great websites for kids and parents

4 10 2008

My previous post was a long introduction to what I really wanted to share this morning: great websites for kids and parents.

Over the last year, Asher and I have discovered several websites that are excellent and I want to share these with our friends and family. Whether you are homeschooling or looking for a constructive way to fill time with your little ones, these websites are full of ideas for learning both online and off.

PBS Kids has games and activities related to many of the TV shows on PBS: Curious George, Calliou, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and others. Asher’s favorite game on this website is Arthur’s Lunch Line Game – to play, you have to add foods with the right nutrients to a lunch tray to make a complete meal. Other favorites include Calliou’s Cooking with Grandma and Clifford’s Scavenger Hunt.

The PBS Teachers webpage is full of educational activities for preschool and kindergarten kids. You can search by subject, skill, and age to find appropriate lesson plans. Much to my husband’s delight, this is where we found a science and math lesson about data analysis for pre-kindergarten age kids!

Starfall.com is a fun website full of games, printable activities, and other ideas to help young children learn to read.

For parents who want to do a little more, Letteroftheweek.com is a resource that provides a free homeschool curriculum for babies, toddlers, and kids through the end of elementary school. The early lessons focus on letters and reading. As kids get older, topics include science and geography. My plan this year is to use some of the ideas from this website to suppliment what Asher is learning at preschool.

There are many different websites that have free printable coloring pages. Here are a few:

Thank-you! I knew about starfall, but I now know about letteroftheweek.com–this site will be priceless for planning my co-op preschool class!

Thanks again!
